Short Recap

  • Holly Joshi, Director of the Department of Violence Prevention, provided an in-depth overview of the city's efforts to re-implement the Ceasefire/Lifeline strategy to reduce gun violence. Key points:

    • Ceasefire is a data-driven, evidence-based model that requires cross-sector collaboration. The DVP is focused on the intervention/support services side, while OPD handles the enforcement.

    •  The DVP has reorganized, retrained staff, and implemented new data collection to ensure fidelity to the Ceasefire model. Early results show 20% reductions in homicides and 30% reductions in shootings.

    •  The DVP is seeking grant funding to expand staffing and services to reach more high-risk individuals.

  • Linda Handy, Council Aide/Senior Policy/Maxwell Park to CM Jenkins provided an update from Councilmember Kevin Jenkins' office, including:

    • Efforts on RV legislation

    • Moving the MOU forward with Northeastern PD

    • An new police substation at Seminary/Foothill.

    •  nvitation to the Healthy Living Festival for seniors on September 26th at the Oakland Zoo.

  • The community discussed the results of an interest sruvey for a private security patrol in Maxwell Park. Key points:

    • Around 50% were interested, with concerns around cost, coverage area, and whether the patrol should be armed or unarmed.

    • Community members raised valid concerns about racial profiling and accountability for a private armed patrol.

    • The group agreed more community outreach is needed to gauge broader interest before moving forward.

    • Barbier Security Group representatives provided information on their experience providing similar services in other neighborhoods.
